This was the only Name ever used when He was on the earth by His family, disciples and His followers OVER THE centuries, even until today! However, it was changed to a foreign name by the founder of the new “pagan church of Rome.” Occasionally, we may also use other Hebrew or Greek names as well as different words in our studies for certain common words used are from pagan backgrounds and thus are not suitable. All names will be translated when they are FIRST used in a study or at various times as needed for clarity. This work dates back to 2000 and it was updated two years later. I need to remind all readers that this work needs to be read prayerfully as it does contain some sad and painful reading. I pray that we take the right stand in the Lord and always let Him be the Judge in all things, even though when we can so clearly see when some have done a great wrong unto others.

I have decided only just recently to return this work online due to a request and I pray that it will strengthen many of the faithful as they go forward as led by the Holy Spirit in faith and share the Word to a world lost and unto the People of Israel!

Although this page contains only many excerpts from Luther’s book, the entire book can be found on the last page number 3, and chapter 11 is one of the most shocking and the one that Hitler read out in part during his speeches!

Part Two – Intro & Excerpts by Luther’s last work

Introduction – “Luther and the Jewish People”

When requested to write an article about Martin Luther, and his attitude toward the people of Israel, I hesitated, as it being a controversial subject. The author being a teacher of the Word of Elohim (God), this kind of investigative style of journalism is not what one usually tackles. However, after prayerful consideration, I decided to write it, for within this work lies solid Scriptural instruction, and an uplifting message for the faithful in Messiah Yahushua, the Lord Yeshua.

Details of the life and teachings of Luther and his reformation are clearly etched in history. However, little is known of Luther's teachings during the latter part of his ministry, especially when it comes to his attitude towards the Hebrew (Jewish) people. The question may be asked, “does it matter what he thought of the Jews?” According to the Word of Elohim (God), it does indeed! Did Yahushua not say that it matters to Him how we treat His Hebrew brethren? And let’s face it, He was speaking of the “Children of Israel” not the “Christian Church,” for Christianity or the Messianic Fellowship as such did not exist yet.

“Assuredly, I (Yahushua) say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these MY brethren (speaking of the children of Israel) you did it to Me” Mattityahu -Matthew 25:40.

This work will ask the question, did Martin Luther have a “Ministry of Reconciliation?” In answer, it is important that the faithful in the Lord know the facts regarding his teachings, both the good and the bad, and his actions against the “Children of Israel,” which had tragic repercussions, for it will provide us with an understanding, of “the folly of men,” famous or not. History clearly describes the madness of the inquisition and the crusaders, as they slaughtered both the Jews and yes even faithful in the Lord who were known as the Protestor’s who would not accept the pagan teachings of the pagan Roman Catholic or Lutheran Church for that matter, for they were never that far apart! Luther at first fought against the Roman attacks, and called for change. As we continue, let us set the foundation of the subject with the precious Word of Elohim.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Messiah, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of Elohim, who has reconciled us to Himself through Yahushua the Messiah, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation” 2 Corinthians 5: 17 & 18.

In order to gain an insight of Luther’s thinking, regarding the Jews, and other matters, let us first study his thoughts and actions during the early years of his ministry.

Martin Luther (1483-1546) is regarded by many as the great reformer of the Church. He rejected Rome, and the Latin translation of “the Bible.” It is said that he sought out the Hebrew Scriptures, which he proceeded to translate into German, which was unusual considering that Luther had very little to no knowledge of Hebrew, others, including some questionable Hebrew scholars, were working with him to complete this massive task. When completed, Germans were able to read the rather poor Lutheran translation of the Word in their own language for the first time. It is recorded that during his ministry from 1513 to 1525, Luther upheld that Word to the measure of his understanding and knowledge within his reformed version of the Church of Rome. He did however retain much of the Roman erroneous teachings, but his fame is mainly related to one single Scripture, which he highlighted from the Word, “Justification by Faith” (Romans 5:1).

Early in his ministry, he was genuinely concerned relating the persecution of the Jews by the Roman Catholic Church. He recommended a more tolerant policy toward them, based on the “Spirit of Christian brotherhood.” He considered the Jewish question in his pamphlet of 1523 entitled “Dass Jesus Christus ein geborrener Jude sei” – “Jesus Christ was born a Jew.” He argued in this work that the “Jesish people are from the same stock as the founder of Christianity.” He felt that the Jew’s were right to reject “papal paganism” or “popery” and “monkery” as he called it. At the height of his battle with Roman Catholicism, he considered that the Church “had treated the Jews as though they were dogs, not men.” Sadly, later Luther himself would call the Hebrew people “mad dogs”(1). At first, Luther's disruptive impact on Roman Catholicism (which the Jewish people equated with the detested kingdom of Edom), was welcomed by many of Israel as a break in the monolithic power of the Church. Luther believed that the Jewish people would accept his new reformed faith and his new Church, and that many would convert. Although appreciating Luther's apparent kindness toward them, the Jewish population resisted his message.

Whether through irritation at their refusal to accept his new religion he became irritated and angry. However, we need to remember that one of Luther’s biggest problems was that his church continued using what Israel clearly considered the use of pagan statues and images, for the Word clearly states, “Thou shalt not make ANY graven Images or make anything of any Likeness,” ect! Luther soon became disillusioned and grew extremely angry and hostile to the extreme towards the Jewish people.

In 1526 he began to speak of “Jewish stubbornness” in clinging to “their traditional interpretation of Scripture.” His attacks on the Jewish people became increasingly impassioned. In 1530, he called them “stiff-necked Jews, iron-hearted, stubborn as the devil.”

Luther was well known for his frequent fiery outbursts. Speaking of “the raging madness” of the Roman Catholic Church, he said “why do we not seize with arms in hand all those evil teachers of perdition, popes, bishops and cardinals and the entire of Roman Sodom. Why do we not wash our hands in their blood”(2). Just listen to the language “Wash our hands in their blood” Can this be a statement from a “Born Again” believer in the Messiah? Certainly not! According to the Word of Elohim, a son or daughter of Messiah Yahushua is not able to harm, let alone murder a person who will not accept Yahushua as Lord of their life. YHVH (The LORD) Elohim will punish those that oppose and ultimately reject “His only Begotten Son” - “for the wages of sin is death.” We, the faithful in Messiah Yahushua, have been given “the ministry of reconciliation.” Hallelu’Yah.

During the (non-Jewish) peasant uprising, Luther gave clear instructions to his followers how to go forth and how to fight the battle. “We must pray for them that they might obey. If they do not, there will be no mercy. They should be broken to pieces, strangled, and stabbed, secretly and openly by those that are able to do if. Be mindful that there cannot be anything more poisonous, more harmful, more devilish than a rebellious person who must to be killed, just as one must kill a mad dog”(2).

It seems unbelievable that these words came from the lips of a man who is regarded to this day as the “Great Christian Reformer.” What did Yahushua command us to do in relation to those that reject Him, “kill” them like “mad dogs?” No, indeed not. When Judas betrayed Yahushua a in the garden, one in the Lord’s presence took his sword and cut off the ear of the priest's servant. What was Yahushua’s response?

“Yahushua said to him, ‘Put your sword in its place, for all who take (live by) the sword will perish by the sword’” Mattityahu - Matthew 26:52.

The message is clear. “Those who live by the sword shall die by the sword.” We the faithful in Messiah Yahushua, use different means of spiritual warfare, as the Word of Elohim through the apostle Shaul - Paul commands us,

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in Elohim for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of Elohim” 2 Corinthians 10: 3-5.

“Take the helmet of salvation and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of Elohim” Ephesians 6:17.

In 1543 Martin Luther vented his hatred for the Jewish people when he circulated his booklet entitled “Von den Juden und ihren Lügen”(1), or “The Jews and their Lies” wherein he heaped monstrous accusations on the Jewish People.

In the book he expressed his anger of the Jews by calling them, “venomous and virulent,” “thieves and brigands,” and “disgusting vermin”(1), and exhorted the Christian princes to undertake the following. “First” he wrote, “their Synagogues should be set on fire and whatever does not burn up should be covered or spread over with dirt so that no one may ever be able to see a cinder or stone of it”(1).

He urged that “Jewish homes,” be “broken down and destroyed”(1), and that the “Jews should then be placed under one roof, or in a stable, like Gypsies, in order that they may realise that they are not masters in our land”(1). Luther continued “These poisonous worms (the Jewish people) should be driven out of the country for all time like mad dogs”(1). Many of the Protestant rulers of the times relied on Luther’s political advice, his maniacal tirades against Israel resulted in the expulsion of Jews from Saxony in 1543 and the hostile “Judenordnung” of prince Philip von Hesse in that same year.

Luther thus far had incited hatred and murder against the peasants and the Jews, yet there were other hideous errors, which proved his Gospel errors in VARIOUS areas.

How Luther blessed a bigamous marriage.

Phillip von Hesse, prince of the Germans who persecuted the Jewish people so severely in 1543, outwardly embraced the faith of Luther, however it seemed that both he and prince John Fredrick the Elector of Saxony, hoped to be “justified by their faith” rather than by their works. Both were well known in certain circles and were “occasionally tipsy” to say the least. Philip von Hesse, had an irregular sex life, as his wife, a Saxon princess, very well knew. In 1539, this syphilitic evangelical had decided that the most effective method of discouraging the habit of fornication was to enter into a “bigamous” union. A union, which would, he argued, satisfy the lusts of the flesh, and yet give a kind of moral stability, which this far was conspicuously lacking from his private life. The precocious young man had raised the issue of bigamy with Luther as early as 1526. Luther answered that a Christian could have no more than one wife. Nevertheless, he did make a curious revelation that in certain circumstances, such as, “if your wife is afflicted with leprosy,” he could “conceivably justify a bigamous union.” Thirteen years later, being in love with Margaret von der Saale, Philip von Hesse approached Martin Bucer. This associate of Luther had been sufficiently impressed by the polygamous behaviour of the patriarchs in the Old Testament. He would give his approval, because at least a bigamous marriage would eliminate the sin of fornication. He did, however, add that such a union “must be kept absolutely secret.” Bucer consulted Luther at Wittenberg. They came to a similar conclusion founded on the sexual customs of the Old Testament patriarchs, drawing up a declaration on December 10th, 1539, which gave virtual permission to Philip to go ahead with his projected union. While asserting that monogamy is the universal divine law, they agreed that Elohim had conceded polygamy to the patriarchs because of the weakness of the flesh. They deprecated the irregular sex life of Philip von Hesse, reminded him that he ought to resist the lusts of the flesh according to the precepts of the Gospel and then, admitting though regretting his inability to remain continent, approved the bigamous union provided “it was kept a strict secret.”

Acceptance of the document bristled with obvious difficulties, quite apart from the fact that if the union was to be kept a secret, Philip was giving the outside world a splendid example of fornication. Either the reformers were extremely confused and unduly influenced by the example of the Old Testament, which would seem unlikely in view of their intelligence, or they were corrupted to act as they did for reasons of political and religious expediency. Phillip von Hesse was the founder and upholder of the “Schmalkaldic League,” thus Luther was not able to disown a man of such noted military reputation whose defection would be a severe blow to Lutheranism.

Luther and his colleagues had been surprisingly naive, especially believing that the bigamous union could be kept secret. Philip’s personal chaplain, Father Melander, performed the ‘marriage’ on March 4^th 1540, in the presence of Bucer, Melanchthon, other priests and selected guests. Soon the facts became widely known and Philip's sister, the Duchess of Rocklitz, in whose service Margaret had been, was extremely angry; the rightful Landgravine's uncle, the Duke of Saxony, was naturally furious. The scandal, as Luther soon realised, was bound to do his cause a grave disservice. Philip von Hesse pressed for a public statement, but Luther robustly opposed this, preferring to tell, as he bluntly put it, a “good strong lie.” Feeling the cold wind of Evangelical disapproval, Philip moved steadily towards the Imperialists, persuaded that the Emperor could give him immunity from the consequences of his bigamous union.

The sad fact is, beloved, that Luther never repented of the sin relating to Phillip von Hesse’s bigamous union, neither in regard his stand against the Children of Israel and of the violence, which he authorised to be unleashed against Jews, Catholics and the troublesome peasants. A few days prior his death, Luther preached a sermon at 'Eisleben' in 1546, when he again urged the princes of Christendom “not to suffer the Jews, those hardened blasphemers, but to expel them.”3 As one writer puts it, “Luther's diatribe against the Jews would have done credit to Hitlerism. It was his pamphlets on “The Jews and their Lies” which advocated their elimination from all Christendom.”4

In 1920, a young lecturer gave an impassioned address entitled. “Why we are against the Jews.” The name of this young speaker was none other than Adolf Hitler. He declared, “it is the German duty to arouse, whip up and incite the instinctive repugnance of the Jews to even a higher pitch.” The political party that Hitler controlled attracted masses of like-minded Germans. The Nazis set themselves the task to cleanse Germany and to restore the supremacy of the Aryan race and rescue the German, Teutonic peoples from the “cancerous species of Jews and other non-Aryan subcultures.’ Hatred was the main feature of Hitler's programme, hatred of the Jews, hatred of Slavs, Gypsies and other so-called inferior people. Even the mentally and physically handicapped were hated and doomed for extermination. Millions cheered Hitler as he promised to make Germany great again. They also cheered when Hitler quoted Luther's book “The Jews and their Lies” and promised to drive “the disgusting vermin, the Jews, out of existence for all time like mad dogs.” He wasted no time in carrying out his programme of satanic hatred. Luther called for this same programme back in 1543 and again just prior his death in 1546 “not to suffer the Jews, those hardened blasphemers, but to expel them” to “drive them out of the country like mad dogs.” How do the words and deeds of Luther in relation to the Jewish people line up with the Word of Elohim (God)?

“By their fruits you will know them. Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven” Matthew 7:20-2.

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life” Proverbs 1 1:30.

“I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you” Genesis 12:3.

“As you have done unto Israel, so will it be done to you” Obadiah verse 15 (TLB).

Beloved, we have been exhorted by Yahushua himself to go and share the Gospel unto all nations, including the children of Israel. “That repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” Luke 24:47. Paul gave us the following instruction in the book of Romans,

“Hath Elohim (God) cast away His people? Elohim forbid ... Elohim has not cast away His people whom He foreknew ... for as you (believers who once were Gentiles) have now obtained mercy through Israel's unbelief. Even so has Israel now not believed, that through your mercy (Prayer) they may also obtain mercy (Salvation).” Beloved, please read Romans chapters 10 & 11.

Without doubt, Martin Luther turned the world of Catholicism upside-down when he nailed his ‘articles of faith’ to the door. However, he only succeeded in starting another form of Roman / pagan style of Church, which continued to uphold much of Roman Catholic beliefs and pagan traditions. Let us learn from the events of his life and seek YHVH Elohim, for He will be the Arbiter of Luther's ministry and his life. However, we should not forget that history also records that throughout Europe there were pockets of true believers (a remnant). These believers stood apart from Orthodox Churches and were a faithful witness of Yahushua the Messiah. It is well recorded that Catholics and Lutherans persecuted Jews, but they also had an intense hatred for these faithful servants of Messiah Yahushua as they would not conform to their erroneous beliefs. These believers upheld the true faith and lived in fullness of the Word of Elohim, including adult baptism, full immersion, which neither Catholics, or Lutherans believe in!

Inconsistency and violence characterised Luther's utterances in most fields, but perhaps in none with more disastrous consequences than in his statements regarding the Jewish people. Due to his vituperative anti-Jewish polemics, the Lutheran Church, unlike that which owed its foundation to John Calvin, retained all the superstitious abhorrence of the Jews, which they inherited from the medieval Roman Catholic Church.

As I stated earlier Luther wrote this work in 1543, however he died just three years later, in February 1546 from what is said to have been from a “coronary thrombosis.” However, prior to his death he had been suffering severe weeping open ulcers on his leg that had to be dressed daily. He also had throat and ear infections, and continued to have problems with his uric acid stones, arthritis, ongoing heart problems, and digestive disorders and all problems had been ongoing since 1543 for some strange reason?

I pray beloved we have learned much from this article. 1. In spite of what we know about the weakness of man, be they in Messiah or not, let YHVH Elohim be their Judge. Let us stand strong in our faith, learn from history's mistakes, and continue do that which YHVH requires of us. 2. That our ministry in Him, be it to Jew or Gentile, be a “ministry of reconciliation” and one equipped with “the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of Elohim.” 3. As instructed in the Word, let us share our love and “mercy” with the children of Israel.

Beloved, the greatest “mercy” of all is to pray that many of the House of Israel will be saved, washed clean by the shed Blood of the Lamb, Yahushua our Messiah. Then in him we are One, “neither Jew nor Greek.” All glory to the Name of YHVH!

“I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they shall never hold their peace (pray) day or night. You who make mention of YHVH, do not keep silent, And give Him no rest till He establishes and till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth” Isaiah 62:6-7 (NKJ).

In other words beloved, pray until He comes!

A brief Intro to Excerpts from Luther’s work.

It is impossible for modern people to read the horrible passages quoted below and not to think of the burning of synagogues in November 1938 on Krystalnacht. Nor would one wish to excuse Luther for this text.

A number of points must, however, be made. The most important concerns the language used. Luther used violent and vulgar language throughout his career: he was not a man to say “manure” when for he actually said in German, and I am sorry to use the word “scheiße” or “shit.” We do not expect religious figures to use this sort of language in the modern world, but it was not uncommon in the early 16th century. Second, although Luther's comments seem to be proto-Nazi, they are better seen as part of tradition of Medieval Christian anti-semitism. While there is little doubt that Christian anti-Semitism laid the social and cultural basis for modern anti-Semitism, modern anti-Semitism does differ in being based on pseudo scientific notions of race. However, the Nazis took Luther’s writings as a guide to their “Final Solution.” This brief intro is by the author of RMI Ministries International and Scriptural Truths.

I had made up my mind to write no more either about the Jews or against them. But since I learned that these miserable and accursed people do not cease to lure to themselves even us, that is, the Christians, I have published this little book, so that I might be found among those who opposed such poisonous activities of the Jews who warned the Christians to be on their guard against them. I would not have believed that a Christian could be duped by the Jews into taking their exile and wretchedness upon himself. However, the devil is the God of the world, and wherever God's word is absent he has uneasy task, not only with the weak but also with the strong. May God help us. Amen.

He did not call them Abraham's children, but a "brood of vipers" [Matt. 3:7]. Oh, that was too insulting for the noble blood and race of Israel, and they declared, "He has a demon' [Matt 11:18]. Our Lord also calls them a "brood of vipers"; furthermore in John 8 [:39,44] he states: "If you were Abraham's children ye would do what Abraham did.... You are of your father the devil. It was intolerable to them to hear that they were not Abraham's but the devil's children, nor can they bear to hear this today.

Therefore, dear Christian, be advised and do not doubt that next to the devil, you have no more bitter, venomous, and vehement foe than a real Jew who earnestly seeks to be a Jew.

Learn from this, dear Christian, what you are doing if you permit the blind Jews to mislead you. Then the saying will truly apply, "When a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into the pit" [cf. Luke 6:39]. You cannot learn anything from them except how to misunderstand the divine commandments …

Therefore be on your guard against the Jews, knowing that wherever they have their synagogues, nothing is found but a den of devils in which sheer self-glory, conceit, lies, blasphemy, and defaming of God and men are practiced most maliciously and veheming his eyes on them.

Moreover, they are nothing but thieves and robbers who daily eat no morsel and wear no thread of clothing which they have not stolen and pilfered from us by means of their accursed usury. Thus they live from day to day, together with wife and child, by theft and robbery, as arch-thieves and robbers, in the most impenitent security.

However, they have not acquired a perfect mastery of the art of lying; they lie so clumsily and ineptly that anyone who is just a little observant can easily detect it. But for us Christians they stand as a terrifying example of God's wrath.

If I had to refute all the other articles of the Jewish faith, I should be obliged to write against them as much and for as long a time as they have used for inventing their lies-- that is, longer than two thousand years.

...Christ and his word can hardly be recognized because of the great vermin of human ordinances. However, let this suffice for the time being on their lies against doctrine or faith.

Did I not tell you earlier that a Jew is such a noble, precious jewel that God and all the angels dance when he farts?

Alas, it cannot be anything but the terrible wrath of God which permits anyone to sink into such abysmal, devilish, hellish, insane baseness, envy, and arrogance. If I were to avenge myself on the devil himself I should be unable to wish him such evil and misfortune as God's wrath inflicts on the Jews, compelling them to lie and to blaspheme so monstrously, in violation of their own conscience. Anyway, they have their reward for constantly giving God the lie.

... but then eject them forever from this country. For, as we have heard, God's anger with them is so intense that gentle mercy will only tend to make them worse and worse, while sharp mercy will reform them but little. Therefore, in any case, away with them!

Over and above that we let them get rich on our sweat and blood, while we remain poor and they such the marrow from our bones.

I brief, dear princes and lords, those of you who have Jews under your rule-- if my counsel does not please your, find better advice, so that you and we all can be rid of the unbearable, devilish burden of the Jews, lest we become guilty sharers before God in the lies, blasphemy, the defamation, and the curses which the mad Jews indulge in so freely and wantonly against the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, this dear mother, all hristians, all authority, and ourselves. Do not grant them protection, safe-conduct, or communion with us.... .With this faithful counsel and warning I wish to cleanse and exonerate my conscience.

Let the government deal with them in this respect, as I have suggested. But whether the government acts or not, let everyone at least be guided by his own conscience and form for himself a definition or image of a Jew.

However, we must avoid confirming them in their wanton lying, slandering, cursing, and defaming. Nor dare we make ourselves partners in their devilish ranting and raving by shielding and protecting them, by giving them food, drink, and shelter, or by other neighbourly.

Therefore we Christians, in turn, are obliged not to tolerate their wanton and conscious blasphemy.

Accordingly, it must and dare not be considered a trifling matter but a most serious one to seek counsel against this and to save our souls from the Jews, that is, from the devil and from eternal death.

What shall we Christians do with this rejected and condemned people, the Jews? Since they live among us, we dare not tolerate their conduct, now that we are aware of their lying and reviling and blaspheming. If we do, we become sharers in their lies, cursing and blaspemy. Thus we cannot extinguish the unquenchable fire of divine wrath, of which the prophets speak, nor can we convert the Jews. With prayer and the fear of God we must pratice a sharp mercy to see whether we might save at least a few from the glowing flames. We dare not avenge ourselves. Vengenance a thousand times worse than we could wish them already has them by the throat. I shall give you my sincere advice:

First to set fire to their synagogues or schools and to bury and cover with dirt whatever will not burn, so that no man will ever again see a stone or cinder of them. This is to be done in honor of our Lord and of Christendom, so that God might see that we are Christians, and do not condone or knowingly tolerate such public lying, cursing, and blaspheming of his Son and of his Christians. For whatever we tolerated in the past unknowingly - and I myself was unaware of it - will be pardoned by God. But if we, now that we are informed, were to protect and shield such a house for the Jews, existing right before our very nose, in which they lie about, blaspheme, curse, vilify, and defame Christ and us (as was heard above), it would be the same as if we were doing all this and even worse ourselves, as we very well know.

Second, I advise that their houses also be razed and destroyed. For they pursue in them the same aims as in their synagogues. Instead they might be lodged under a roof or in a barn, like the gypsies. This will bring home to them that they are not masters in our country, as they boast, but that they are living in exile and in captivity, as they incessantly wail and lament about us before God.

Third, I advise that all their prayer books and Talmudic writings, in which such idolatry, lies, cursing and blasphemy are taught, be taken from them. (remainder omitted)

Fourth, I advise that their rabbis be forbidden to teach henceforth on pain of loss of life and limb. For they have justly forfeited the right to such an office by holding the poor Jews captive with the saying of Moses (Deuternomy 17 [:10 ff.]) in which he commands them to obey their teachers on penalty of death, although Moses clearly adds: "what they teach you in accord with the law of the Lord." Thoses villains ignore that. They wantonly employ the poor people's obedience contrary to the law of the Lord and infuse them with this poison, cursing, and blasphemy. In the same way the pope also held us captive with the declaration in Matthew 16 {:18], "You are Peter," etc, inducing us to believe all the lies and deceptions that issued from his devilish mind. He did not teach in accord with the word of God, and therefore he forfeited the right to teach.

Fifth, I advise that safe-conduct on the highways be abolished completely for the Jews. For they have no business in the countryside, since they are not lords, officials, tradesmen, or the like. Let they stay at home. (remainder omitted).

Sixth, I advise that usury be prohibited to them, and that all cash and treasure of silver and gold be taken from them and put aside for safekeeping. The reason for such a measure is that, as said above, they have no other means of earning a livelihood than usury, and by it they have stolen and robbed from us all they possess. Such money should now be used in no other way than the following: Whenever a Jew is sincerely converted, he should be handed one hundred, two hundred, or three hundred florins, as personal circumstances may suggest. With this he could set himself up in some occupation for the support of his poor wife and children, and the maintenance of the old or feeble. For such evil gains are cursed if they are not put to use with God's blessing in a good and worthy cause.

Seventh, I commend putting a flail, an ax, a hoe, a spade, a distaff, or a spindle into the hands of young, strong Jews and Jewesses and letting them earn their bread in the sweat of their brow, as was imposed on the children of Adam (Gen 3[:19]}. For it is not fitting that they should let us accursed Goyim toil in the sweat of our faces while they, the holy people, idle away their time behind the stove, feasting and farting, and on top of all, boasting blasphemously of their lordship over the Christians by means of our sweat. No, one should toss out these lazy rogues by the seat of their pants.

But what will happen even if we do burn down the Jews' synagogues and forbid them publicly to praise God, to pray, to teach, to utter God's name? They will still keep doing it in secret. If we know that they are doing this in secret, it is the same as if they were doing it publicly. for our knowledge of their secret doings and our toleration of them implies that they are not secret after all and thus our conscience is encumbered with it before God.

First, that their synagogues be burned down, and that all who are able toss in sulphur and pitch; it would be good if someone could also throw in some hellfire. That would demonstrate to God our serious resolve and be evidence to all the world that it was in ignorance that we tolerated such houses, in which the Jews have reviled God, our dear Creator and Father, and his Son most shamefully up till now but that we have now given them their due reward.

I wish and I ask that our rulers who have Jewish subjects exercise a sharp mercy toward these wretched people, as suggested above, to see whether this might not help (though it is doubtful). They must act like a good physician who, when gangrene has set in, proceeds without mercy to cut, saw, and burn flesh, veins, bone, and marrow. Such a procedure must also be followed in this instance. Burn down their synagogues, forbid all that I enumerated earlier, force them to work, and deal harshly with them, as Moses did in the wilderness, slaying three thousand lest the whole people perish. They surely do not know what they are doing; moreover, as people possessed, they do not wish to know it, hear it, or learn it. There it would be wrong to be merciful and confirm them in their conduct. If this does not help we must drive them out like mad dogs, so that we do not become partakers of their abominable blasphemy and all their other vices and thus merit God's wrath and be damned with them. I have done my duty. Now let everyone see to his. I am exonerated.

My essay, I hope, will furnish a Christian (who in any case has no desire to become a Jew) with enough material not only to defend himself against the blind, venomous Jews, but also to become the foe of the Jews' malice, lying, and cursing, and to understand not only that their belief is false but that they are surely possessed by all devils. May Christ, our dear Lord, convert them mercifully and preserve us steadfastly and immovably in the knowledge of him, which is eternal life.
