“The Justice and the Mercy of Elohim”
Shemos - Exodus 1:1
The Torah (Five Books of Moses) & the
Tanach (all of the Old Covenant)
is full of history, or as I like to call it - HIS story. Thus, it is
Elohim’s (God’s) story and that of His people,
“B’ney Yisro’el” Hebrew for - the “Children of
Israel.” The most thrilling story found in His Word is the remarkable
deliverance of Elohim’s people from the
As we read the blessed Word, even as we read about the events of those days we need to realise that it is prophetic and it is most relevant to all of us, even right now in this day, and I will explain this whenever it is relevant!
In this series, we are going to look at one of
the greatest escape stories ever told, but we also need to look at the
individuals involved, especially Moshe -
As we know,
Just for interest,
Although the all powerful and mighty
The following are just some statistics that
were worked out by an English General many years ago:
They required 2,400 tons of firewood per
day … in the desert!
The minimum requirement for survival was 2
million gallons of water per day.
The details above provide you with an idea of
the magnitude of
So far I have provided the certain facts based on what I call The “human level,” but there is so much more to this remarkable story, for obviously on a human level the whole event was impossible, for the truth is that Israel could have never have made it on their own. Just think about it, after they escaped, the Children of Israel lived in the desert for 40 years. That is a very long time to live in this huge, expansive barren desert.
I recall an event of more modern times, and I
am speaking of the very same desert, where the Egyptian soldiers during the
“Yom Kippur War”
were unable to survive for a mere three short days and they were captured by
the Israelis due to their great thirst and hunger. Yet,
The Exodus is not only a human story, but above all it is a Divine story, for YaHVaH Elohim, blessed be His Sanctified Name, took in hand Israel’s story and ensured their release with miracle after miracle!
Beloved, without miracles this great escape
could not have happened. Anyone who does not believe in miracles, or does not
believe in

For believers in Yahushua the Messiah the Exodus also has a huge prophetic meaning for it speaks of deliverance - you may ask out of what? Well here are the three main factors: 1. Out of bondage. 2. Out of slavery. 3. Out of sin.
Believers should read the Torah (Five Books of Moses,) and the Tanach
(Old Covenant) a great deal more for it contains so much more than just the “begets.” Especially in
the book of Shemos - Exodus, for this book greatly influences the Brit Chadashah – the New Covenant.
You will find words from this book throughout the Brit Chadashah like “Covenant,”
“Blood,” “Lamb,” “Passover” and “Leaven” and so much more.
Each of those words comes directly from Shemos - Exodus. Why? You
might ask. Was it because the first believers in Yahushua were all
Hebrew’s and they wrote the “Brit Chadashah” the “New Covenant.” Or, was it
because Yahushua was from the “Tribe
of
No, it was
because the Elohim of Moshe in the Tanach is the same Elohim in the Brit Chadashah. For
What does the book of Shemos - Exodus teach us? It teaches us that Elohim, blessed be He, is a Redeemer. It shows that He desires to rescue people out of trouble. All we have to do is trust Him, just as Moshe trusted Him.
We are first going to look at parts of the Book of Bereshis – Genesis, for everything in the Word is there for a specific reason and there is an order of things!
In the book of Bereshis - Genesis, we find the history of man’s failure, and of what he was to be. Let us start at the “Beginning.” The word “Bereshis” being the name of the first word in the first book of the Scriptures is Hebrew for “In the beginning” and this chapter commenced with the creation, with all things being perfect and everything in total harmony. It continues with the creation of man as well as the first sin and the rest of the story we all know too well!
But let me ask you this, considering this book commences with creation and life, do you know how this book concludes? ... Actually it ends with death and a coffin. You will read this in the very last verse of the Book.
“So Yoseph (
Bereshis - Genesis contains the story of
man’s failure, but the Almighty, blessed be He, had a plan, an escape
plan, a great Exodus for
Beloved, YaHVaH has a place for us. He desires us to be at the right place at the right time! Bereshis - Genesis is the story of man’s sin, ending in death, and the Shemos - Exodus comes straight after saying in Bereshis - Genesis 50:24 & 25;
“I am dying; but Elohim will surely
visit you, and bring you out of this land to the land of which He swore to
Avraham, to Yitzchak - Isaac, and to Ya’akov - Jacob.’ Then
The following is my somewhat paraphrased version, it may not say all that, but it does contain the feeling of freedom!
“Elohim is going to redeem you. Yes, there is a way out. It may seem impossible to you, but trust me, Elohim will show you the Exit, for He is the Door.”
We know redemption came ONLY after the
door was painted with the “blood of the Lamb
without spot and blemish.” That door was the perfect picture, an
analogy of Yahushua the Lamb of Elohim! Blessed be our heavenly Father for our
beloved Messiah is the way out of a life of sin, and the way into “the
In Shemos - Exodus, we also read about a marvellous portable building erected in the heart of the wilderness, the Tabernacle. This was a place for Elohim to dwell amongst His people. Again, within the Tabernacle are many blessed pictures of Yahushua the Messiah and those in Him. Another study is available online regarding this subject. Yahushua said …
“Search the Scriptures, the Tanach, for
it bears witness of me.” Yochanan -
As recorded in the Brit Chadashah – New Covenant, Yahushua went up a mountain
and in a vision, as recorded in Mattityahu - Matthew 17:9, He spoke
with Moshe and Eliyahu -
“They spoke about His departure (His
Exodus), which He was about to bring to fulfilment at
Yahushua might have said “Moshe you

Here are Moshe’s family details:
His Father = Amram.
Mother = Yochebed.
Sister
=
Brother
=
Wife = Zipporah – a spiteful woman!
Sons = Gershom & Eliezer.
As we read about the life of Moshe, it is almost like reading a fairy tale.
For 40 years, Moshe lived much like an Egyptian prince in a Palace, in sheer luxury, whilst his own people, the Children of Israel, lived like slaves.
At 40 years of age, he went to visit the people to whom he really belonged. He was foreign to them, as he had lived an Egyptian lifestyle but somehow there must have been an affinity within him. He saw one of the Hebrews being ill treated and Moshe killed the Egyptian offender. Thus here we see him take the situation in his own hands. It was the wrong moment you might say for Moshe to help his people. It certainly was the wrong method, for it was done in the wrong manner. It was done for them, rather than with them. All too soon, Pharaoh heard what Moshe had done and thus Moshe was banished into the wilderness aged 40. Thus that has covered his first 40 years, but as we all know, there are 80 more years ahead of him, and they also are in two parts of 40. Are we getting the point that 40 means something special here? Obviously it does, for it comes up again and again throughout the Word of Elohim and it is for a reason!
In this series of studies, we are going to
look at the Book of Shemos - Exodus on three specific Levels.
Level 1 - Human Level
|
It is a human story, with human
details, and it is good to look at it on this level, because the Word of
Elohim is a very human book, However, there is a higher level. |
Level 2 - The Divine Level
|
What does this book say about
Elohim? It reveals that it is a Divine Book. |
Level 3 - The
Believers/Spiritual Level |
Yes, it is very much a
Believer’s book and we will see what Elohim says to us believers, the
faithful today. |
Let us look at the First chapter of Shemos - Exodus, and consider it in these three ways.
“Then a new king, who did not know about
Yoseph -
The Word speaks of the incredible danger the
children of
1. The new king (Pharaoh) mentioned in this
Scripture would have been sometime around 170 years after the arrival of
As we can see, verses 1 to 7 of Shemos -
Exodus chapter 1 deals with large families. However, it also in short recaps the
last details of the book of Bereshis - Genesis. Thus there is around a 170 year
gap between the last verse in the previous book and what we have just read
here. Originally it was just 70 individuals that came to
Therein lies a profound lesson, they could and
should have returned home to the land that Elohim had given to Avraham and his
generations forever and that is where He wanted them to be, after the famine
and danger of the drought was over and the rains had replenished the land.
However, sadly
However, the tragedy is, that there are so many people today, who could come back to Messiah Yahushua, and I do mean YAHUSHUA, right now! But, the vast majority tend to choose to stay just where they are because they think they are in their comfort zone and laden with wealth and their comforts their own faiths of varying degrees, etc! But our Heavenly Father calls out to all who have strayed from the path … “Return again unto Me says YHVH, and I will return again to you.”
Please pray that many will hear that call! That is the choice everyone in the world has. Every person can
return to the Father today, but some will elect to spend years away from Him,
just as
Read this carefully! You see, taking a step in faith means taking action, and people, just like
As we all know, originally it started with just 70 individuals arriving in Egypt, but later, especially during the time of the enslavement there was a massive population explosion amongst the Children of Israel and they multiplied to almost two million all inclusive. That is precisely why at the time in question the Egyptians began to feel that these Israelites were becoming a threat to them.
Is it not amazing, but wherever newcomers or migrants arrive in a country, they are generally the minority, but if there is a slow increase in their numbers and remember, Israel’s growth in numbers happened over around 170 years, the majority will see them as a great threat to their culture as well as their rule, yet they were still the minority group in Egypt.
But to the Egyptian mind at the time, the
Israelite minority had become just too large for them, thus with this new
Pharaoh on the throne he decided to enslave them and place them under severe
bondage. Sadly
Pharaoh did this evil thing on the principle that if you enslave these people and work them hard from dawn till dust and use up all their energy to the point until they drop, they are not likely to have so many babies. Well I have news for you, the truth is, the very opposite occurred. Pharaoh obviously did not understand mankind very well. Throughout the ages as we have seen, that those who have lived a poverty ridden life and worked hard for extreme hours, they always seemed to have more children than the wealthy! Thus Pharaoh turned shepherds into brick makers and builders and even more children were produced than ever before!
The Egyptian’s beat and persecuted the
Children of Israel to the point of genocide by murdering countless of their
baby boys. Although, Pharaoh was happy to let Hebrew girls live, for their idea
was that they could marry Egyptian men and populate
We have now covered what we may call the most
basic human level of chapter 1. But, what of the Divine level? What does
this chapter say about
The first thing Shemos - Exodus says in chapter 3:7 that the Children of Israel are “My people.” Yes they are indeed “Elohim’s people.”
“And YHVH (the LORD) said: ‘I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are

The Scriptures beloved will give us a clue, for there are two reasons:
The First Reason - Elohim’s
Justice.
When
In the case of Yoseph -
The Second Reason - Elohim’s Mercy. It is Elohim’s mercy, which allows us to get into trouble, when we have left from the place of blessing, away from Elohim. Thank Elohim for the Mercy that allows trouble to come.
You see in
Beloved we need to understand that with

Beloved, when we step out of the plan that
Elohim has for us, and we drift away and become content and stay there, Elohim
will allow us to get into trouble. But, His call comes over and over again
… to “Return again unto
to Me and I will return to you.” Yirmyahu -
“Come out and leave the attraction that is holding you. Come back to where Elohim can bless you.” (Paraphrased).
That is what chapter 1 of Shemos - Exodus is saying about Elohim. He is the Redeemer; for He is the Elohim of Justice and of great Mercy.
Elohim’s justice allowed
They certainly would never have followed just one man appointed by Elohim, Moshe who had been in a lonely dry desert, a place of great extremes. Thus, Elohim in His mercy also allows mankind to suffer, that they somehow may desire to return again unto Him.
Let us now look at the third way of looking at the Word, the believer’s side of chapter one. There are deep truths for the faithful in this chapter. Everything in Scripture is there for a reason. Shemos - Exodus Chapter One is full of types, models, and pictures.
Pharaoh is a type, a picture of all evil - the Adversary - HaSatan.
Moshe, as we
will see later in chapter 2, is a partial type, a picture, a type of Yahushua
the Messiah.
Canaan, the
Well, let us go on a little excursion about
Yoseph -
The Word says, that this Pharaoh did not know Yoseph
- Joseph who as we know was also a type and a picture (in part) of our
beloved Saviour Yahushua.
Yoseph - Joseph
was sent to help his brethren, the Children of Israel, but ended up saving
Yoseph - Joseph was betrayed by his own and sold for 20 pieces of silver - Yahushua was betrayed for 30 pieces.
Yoseph - Joseph went into service of an Egyptian lord, but was thrown into prison because of the lies of the wife - Yahushua in service of His Father and He was also falsely accused.
In prison, Yoseph - Joseph found himself in the company of two criminals. One was saved and the other lost - Yahushua was executed between two thieves, one was saved and the other lost.
From the depths of prison, Yoseph - Joseph
was lifted up and saved and given two titles in
Thus as you look at the life of Yoseph -
The main theme of Shemos - Exodus is; YaHVaH saying “Let My People Go. I want them to be free to serve Me.” Whilst the Pharaoh’s of the world will say, “No, I will not let them go.”
Beloved, Elohim can break the power of Pharaoh
and that of HaSatan, and through the power of the Ruach HaKodesh, the Sanctified
(Holy) Spirit, He has also given us the strength in Him to stand against the
wiles of that evil one - HalleluYah!
We need to remember that
The Egyptians were very prosperous, affluent

We have read in the reading earlier that a beautiful baby boy was born to one of the faithful families in Elohim, blessed be He, a family, that would later become a priestly family, the Levites. As we think about this baby, something quite remarkable occurred and that was even before the babe became Moshe and I will cover that in the next study, but it relates to verses 15 to 21. You could read it and see if you can find what it could possibly be?
The faithful in Yahushua should read books
like Shemos - Exodus and the Tanach – Old Covenant much more and learn

Where do we find ourselves today, in
Beloved, I am going to close today with Yochanan - John 15: 5 – 8. I believe it says it all!
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me, you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be My disciples.”
The next study will continue this series on
Shemos - Exodus, but it will also include a short look at Eliyahu -
The third study of the series will get down
into the nitty gritty of Moshe’s first encounter with YaHVaH Elohim at Mt
Sinai and what you will learn there will be a few new things that I pray will
be life changing!
